Since 1990, a volunteer group within Newton Community Pride has designed, planted and tended gardens within the City. Leo Levi initiated this activity, and led and inspired it in the early years. The signature work of this group is the All-America Selections Display Garden in Newton Centre. It is one of only four in Massachusetts and the only one not affiliated with an institution of some kind.* This garden brings enthusiasts from all over to Newton. In addition, we tend a perennial garden in the oval adjacent to the main garden.

The garden is in bloom from April through September each year with spring bulbs, planted the previous October, followed by summer flowers planted in June. In recent years, the volunteers have also grown all of the summer plants for the Newton Centre garden. These include the All America Selection varieties as well as others. This activity starts in early February with seeds and seedlings and ends in June when these summer flowers replace the spring bulbs in the garden. Over the years, several greenhouses in Newton and Waltham have been used to grow these annuals. In 2005, Newton Community Pride was granted use of the greenhouse facility at the Newton Cultural Center.

Volunteers are always welcome at the Newton Centre Garden and other public spaces, as well as the greenhouse. For additional information, call 617-796-1540 or contactus@newtoncommunitypride.org.
